Howard Hewett

Raised in Akron, Ohio,[6] Hewett moved to Los Angeles in 1976, where he first met Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley at a club in the LA Crenshaw district.[7] Hewett formed a show group called “Beverly Hills” and toured throughout Europe, the UK, Scandinavia and Asia for all of 1977 till the middle of 1978. After returning from overseas, Hewett started recording for Jeffrey Bowen.[8]

In 1978, he got a call from Jeffrey Daniel who was in need of a lead singer and Hewett accepted the offer.[8] Within three days Hewett flew to New Jersey, where he met up with Watley and Daniel and started recording the Big Fun LP with their producer, Leon Sylvers. The trio went on to record songs such as “Second Time Around“, “Make That Move“, “A Night to Remember“, “Dancing in the Sheets” and the ballad “This Is for the Lover in You“. Hewett was the group’s lead singer from 1979 until 1985.[9]

When Shalamar broke up in the mid-1980s, Hewett went on to a successful solo career. However, in 1985 before signing his solo deal with Elektra Records, he was arrested and indicted in Miami with his fiancée Mori Molina for possession with an intent to distribute cocaine.[10] Molina, who was indicted in Tampa as well as Miami, was convicted and served prison time; but after a four-day trial, in which Molina testified that Hewett had nothing to do with the crime, Hewett was acquitted of all charges.[11] In spite of his legal battles, Hewett signed his solo deal with Elektra Records and in 1986, before the Miami trial, released his first solo album I Commit to Love (R&B number 12), a solid urban album that yielded two top 10 R&B hits, “I’m for Real” (R&B number 2) and “Stay” (R&B number 8).[12]

In 1988, he released his second album Forever and Ever, which featured the hits “Strange Relationship” (R&B number 9, and “Once, Twice, Three Times” (R&B number 15).[13]

In 1990, Hewett released his self-titled album, which included the hit “Show Me” (R&B number 2), and “If I Could Only Have That Day Back” (R&B number 14).[12] 1992 saw the release of his 4th album Allegiance, which was not received as well as his previous albums. He contributed to the second season theme song of Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, which was a remake of Sam & Dave‘s R&B Top 10 hit “Soul Man“. This recording was produced by singer Steve Tyrell. In 1994, Howard Hewett recorded “Christmas Will Return” with Brenda Russell for the Disney holiday film The Santa Clause. After 1995’s It’s Time (released by Caliber Records in the US and Expansion Records in the UK), Hewett spent much of his time providing guest vocals on albums by jazz artists such as Joe Sample, Brian Culbertson, and George Duke, among others. In 2000, The Rippingtons featured Hewett on “I Found Heaven” on their Life in the Tropics album. In 2001, Hewett recorded his first full gospel album, The Journey, followed a year later by The Journey Live: From the Heart.

In October 2006, Hewett released a new single, “Enough” (with jazz musician George Duke), which received substantial play on urban contemporary and R&B radio stations. Hewett is signed to The Groove Records, an independent label based in Austin Texas.[14] In October 2008, Hewett released his Christmas CD, Howard Hewett Christmas.

ECHO JET BIO

For Denny and Kenny Scott, the accomplished songwriters and performers in the Los Angeles–based five-piece band Echo Jet, a good song is all about melody, interesting and non-clichéd lyrics, and professional production. These qualities are abundantly evident on the band’s self-titled debut album, led by the monster single “Wave.”

“Our writing has always been very melodic,” Denny notes. “We grew up on that kind of songwriting—bands like INXS, early U2, and Tears For Fears, who combined cool guitar lines with memorable melodies and compelling lyrics.”

In fact, Denny may be underselling it. Hook-laden rockers like the ones they mention didn’t just influence them—they helped shape their musical identity. After years of working in the industry, the two brothers now count many of their heroes as peers, including Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, Beck) and Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne).

The Scott brothers, Navy brats in their teens at the time, decided to turn their musical hobby into a career after spending time with radio hitmakers The Outfield. “All the musicians we talked to would say, ‘Get good in the studio and get good at writing songs, most importantly. That’s what’s going to carry you,’” Denny recalls.

Their opportunity to do both came sooner than expected, when a “rich kid” they knew built an elaborate home studio and invited them to try it out. “Denny showed him our song, and next thing you know we were cutting vocals with a drum machine,” Kenny remembers.

Fresh out of high school, the brothers moved from Florida to L.A., demo tape in hand, ready for their big break. But, as Kenny admits, “We weren’t ready for it, man.” Young and “green,” they struggled with an early label deal that tried to market their first band, Swirl 360, as a boy band—focusing on looks over musical talent. “We refused to do any teeny-bop magazines,” Kenny adds. “We said, ‘No way.’” Even Rolling Stone, hardly a teeny-bop publication, awarded Swirl 360 3.5 stars, saying, “It’s been a while since McCartney-esque pop has gotten quite this explosive.”

Afterward, the Scotts turned to television and film, quietly placing songs on soundtracks left and right. “We were lucky that our songs would land on someone’s desk,” Kenny says. “And it made us feel good, because music supervisors definitely don’t use crappy songs. We were able to pay the bills that way.”

Since moving west, the brothers have been honing their craft on stages and in studios for nearly a decade. But make no mistake—Echo Jet’s full lineup, fueled by the Scott brothers’ battle-tested songwriting, marks their definitive moment in the Southern California sun.

While Denny and Kenny are the band’s primary songwriters, they aren’t the whole band. Kenny, who originally started on drums before switching to guitar, gladly cedes the drum throne to Jon Hastings. Joey Clemente handles bass, while Josh Dunahoo rounds out the band on lead guitar.

Ultimately, the band wants its moment in the sun to last long enough to require SPF 45. “We’d love to keep putting out records and writing good songs, touring year after year, and maintaining our fanbase,” Denny says. “Ultimately, I hope we make a mark, and that when people remember us, they say, ‘Hey, that band was cool.’”

On the strength of its debut, Echo Jet’s chances seem good for just that.
